The 27th Science Picnic organized by Polish Radio and the Copernicus Science Center
Our team had the opportunity to participate in the 27th Science Picnic of Polish Radio, organized by Polish Radio and the Copernicus Science Centre. The entire event took place at the National Stadium in Warsaw, where we had our booth together with the Silesian University of Technology. Visitors could gain some knowledge about artificial intelligence and neural networks at our interactive stations. Of course, our Phoenix III rover was also present, attracting the interest of both visitors and the media.
On June 15, 2024, our team traveled to Warsaw to take part in the 27th Science Picnic of Polish Radio, organized by Polish Radio and the Copernicus Science Centre. On Saturday morning, we arrived at the National Stadium to set up three interactive stations we had prepared earlier, as well as our Phoenix III rover. Our stations were part of the Silesian University of Technology’s tent, thanks to which we could participate in the event. But what exactly did we prepare?
At the first station, participants could explore a depth map system based on a stereoscopic camera. The station displayed a 2D image from the camera, a depth map, and a combined image where the depth map was overlaid on the regular camera image. This allowed us to see how far a given object was located.
The remaining stations showcased visual recognition algorithms. The second station focused on hand gesture recognition. Using a camera, the algorithm detected the hand and then determined the gesture based on the position of the fingers. The last station focused on object recognition, using a similar algorithm.
Apart from our stations, our Phoenix III rover moved around the stadium, encouraging everyone to check out what was happening in our tent. Not only did visitors show interest, but so did Trójka – Program 3 of Polish Radio, for whom we gave several interviews. We told listeners about our project, team management, and other events we had participated in.
We are grateful for the opportunity to take part in this event and hope to see you again next year!
