Scientific seminar with the Nobel Laureate prof. Brian Kobilka

Nobel Laureate Prof. Brian Kobilka took part in the scientific seminar "Silesian University of Technology for medicine". During the event, the scientists of our University presented the Nobel laureate and his wife, also a scientist Tong Sun Kobilka, with their scientific research.

The seminar was an opportunity to disseminate the research conducted at the Silesian University of Technology and to discuss it with prof. Brian Kobilka - We hope that what we have presented, Professor Kobilka will be able to pass on to his colleagues and use it to promote the Silesian University of Technology. Among our research areas, we have one related to Computational Oncology and personalized medicine. However, it is so broad that we were not able to present all the research we are conducting in this area. We chose those that are at least partially related to Professor Kobilka's research. I saw that the professor was interested, asked questions and I am counting on establishing cooperation - said the Vice-Rector for Science and Development, prof. Marek Pawełczyk

Professor Brian Kobilka did not rule out establishing such cooperation in the future. He admitted that the research of our scientists presented during the seminar is of a high standard. - I think that this is research on an international scale - added the Nobel Prize winner.

At the seminar "Silesian University of Technology for Medicine" seven scientists of our University presented their research work.

- Today's seminar is a great opportunity to promote Polish science on a global level and to emphasize that interesting projects are also being carried out in Poland that can affect the development of medicine, industry, and in this case, biological and chemical sciences - said prof. Marek Łos, who presented his research on cancer and regenerative medicine.

- Such meetings are also an opportunity to establish cooperation with the best centres and learn how to conduct research at the highest world level - added dr hab. Artur Góra, prof. SUT. The scientist presented his research entitled "Water molecules as the key to understanding and transforming the interior of enzymes".

A seminar with Prof. Brian Kobilka was attended by the University authorities: Vice-Rector for Science and Development prof. Marek Pawełczyk, Vice-Rector for Cooperation with Civic and Economic Environment, prof. Janusz Kotowicz, Vice-Rector for Infrastructure and Promotion dr hab. Eng. Tomasz Trawinski, prof. SUT, as well as scientists and students.

Research presented today:

  • Prof. dr hab. Eng Marek Łos - Cancer research and venturing into regenerative medicine
  • Dr hab. Artur Góra, prof. SUT - Water molecules as a key for enzymes interior understanding and reshaping
  • Dr hab. Magdalena Skonieczna, prof. SUT - Molecular mechanism of regulated cell death in the aspect of civilization diseases
  • Dr hab. Eng. Katarzyna Krukiewicz, prof. SUT - Development of multifunctional biomaterials: working at the interface of electrochemistry, microbiology and neural engineering
  • Dr Eng. Michał Marczyk - Harnessing the power of statistical and machine learning models for advancing cancer research
  • Dr hab. Eng. Ilona Wandzik, prof. SUT - Hydrogels in biomedical applications
  • Dr hab. Eng. Małgorzata Włodarczyk-Biegun - Reconstruction of tissue gradients with 3D printing

During a visit to the Silesian University of Technology, prof. Brian Kobilka visited the Biotechnology Centre and the European HealthTech Innovation Centre (EHTIC) in Zabrze. In the afternoon, in the University Senate Hall, he will meet with students and employees from Ukraine.
