Meeting of prof. Brian Kobilka with the Ukrainian community 

Prof. Brian Kobilka, together with his wife Tong Sun Kobilka, met with Ukrainian students and employees of the Silesian University of Technology. It was attended by the authorities of the university - Rector prof. Arkadiusz Mężyk, Vice-Rector for Science and Development prof. Marek Pawełczyk and rector of the Volyn State University prof. Anatolii Tsos.

The meeting with the Ukrainian community was held on the initiative of prof. Kobilka, who founded the Children of the Ukraine War Fund and organized a collection for the victims of the war in this country.

- This is an expression of great heart on the part of the professor, who is moved by the fate of Ukrainian citizens, especially children - said the rector of the Silesian University of Technology, prof. Arkadiusz Mężyk. 

Mr. and Mrs. Kobilka organized a fundraiser for Ukraine during the international event - GPCR Workshop 2023 in Hawaii. The collected funds were donated through the Silesian University of Technology to the hospital in Łuck, Ukraine, where children - victims of war are treated.

– The originator of this collection was my wife, but I am very proud that I can take part in it. I hope we will be able to do more, said Prof. Kobilka.

– I really wanted to help, so we organized a fundraiser in Hawaii. They liked the idea very much, especially since the aid goes directly to those in need - added Tong Sun Kobilka.

A symbolic check with the collected amount was collected by the Rector of the Volyn State University, prof. Anatolii Tsos.

– Today's meeting is also an opportunity to thank the United States of America for its support and assistance to Ukraine. We can also thank Poland and every Pole for supporting our country and the Ukrainians who are here - said prof. Anatolii Tsos.

The meeting with the Nobel Prize winner is of great importance for the Ukrainian community - emphasized Julia Romaniuk from Kiev, who has been in Poland since March last year and conducts Polish language courses for compatriots at the Silesian University of Technology. – It is very reassuring that such an outstanding scientist, Nobel Prize winner helps our compatriots and supports Ukrainians. We feel that the world is with us, she said. – I would also like to thank the Silesian University of Technology for this meeting and for the support it has given us since the outbreak of the war – she added. 

During the meeting, Ukrainian students and staff could talk to Professor Brian Kobilka. They were interested in the professor's research, career and family history. At the end, there was a small artistic show performed by Ukrainian children.  

The partner of the event is the Upper Silesian and Zagłębie Metropolis.
