On 12 May 2023, a delegation consisting of Agnieszka Kicińska, Agata Kołkowska, Hubert Knap, Mateusz Pilszek and Filip Wojtas set out to win the hearts of young people from the IX High School in Sosnowiec named Wisława Szymborska. The members of ChSRS, in cooperation with the Student Government of the Faculty of Chemistry, organized another edition of workshops for High School students. The students presented the didactic offer of the Faculty of Chemistry to the students and conducted interesting demonstrations along with workshops. Students could listen to how they study at the Silesian University of Technology, what the research teams are and what they do.
During the shows they had the opportunity to see manganese at all levels of oxidation, dyes under UV light or the colors of borax and trimethyl borate flames! Students were able to perform simple precipitation of hydrogen carbonates and transition metal hydroxides on their own.
“Workshops for young people are quite a challenge, because not everyone wants to hear about chemistry, which is difficult. However, they give a lot of satisfaction! It is warm to the heart when the students with fire in their eyes looked at the samples given by the cathedrals or asked a variety of questions without embarrassment. We tried to satisfy their curiosity and answer everything. Even with the temperatures the nanotubes can withstand 😛. Despite the torn throats, we felt the greatest satisfaction when after the workshop the students approached us and said it was great and thanked us for coming!”- comment the students
We are glad to have been able to participate in such an undertaking. We can’t wait to continue exploring our Metropolis and prove that chemistry doesn’t have to be boring!
