An open meeting with Nobel Prize winner Victor R. Ambros
Invitation to an open meeting with Nobel Prize winner Victor R. Ambros
On the eve of awarding the honorary doctorate to Victor R. Ambros by the Silesian University of Technology, a meeting of an outstanding scientist with the university community and the local community will take place, to which we cordially invite you.
The meeting will take place on Monday, May the 5th at 15.30 in the Student Culture Centre “Mrowisko”. Admission to this event free. It will be a great opportunity to listen to a world-famous scientist and make personal contacts.
Prof. Victor R. Ambros works in the United States. In 2024, he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine with Gary Ruvkun.
The most important scientific achievement of Victor Ambros was the discovery of microRNA (miRNA) in 1993. Together with Gary Ruvkun and Rosalinda Lee, he demonstrated that miRNAs play a key role in regulating gene expression, which initiated a new field of molecular biology. His study of the lin-4 gene at Caenorhabditis elegans revealed the existence of short RNA sequences that do not code proteins but regulate other genes by interacting with their mRNAs. This discovery changed the way scientists understand the mechanisms of genetic control of developmental processes and had far-reaching consequences for research into cancer, metabolic and neurological diseases.
