Treasure Week at the Silesian University of Technology

Already in the second week of January, from January 8th to 14th, the Treasure Week will be held at the Silesian University of Technology. The event is carried out as part of the European City of Science Katowice 2024.

It's a week full of attractions and surprises! Treasure Week will be held at the Silesian University of Technology. We start on January 8th, 2024.

Schedule of the Event:

Monday, January 8th, we will discover the treasures of the past written in the rocks. Dr Dawid Surmik from the University of Silesia will talk about the search for treasures dating back hundreds of millions of years, i.e. the work of a palaeontologist. The lecture will be held in a special space used to disseminate the idea of the European City of Science Katowice 2024 - Kato Science Corner, located at the intersection of Pocztowa and Młyńska streets in Katowice.

On the same day, you will also be able to take part in the workshop "Treasures of the prehistoric world - fossils", taking place at the Earth Sciences Museum in Sosnowiec. Here you will be able to touch and recognize the fossilized remains of various animal groups and learn about the stratigraphic table describing the history of the Earth.

On Tuesday, January 9th, we invite you to the Faculty of Mining, Safety Engineering and Industrial Automation of the Silesian University of Technology in Gliwice, where you will be able to learn about the principles of geocaching. This field game, popular all over the world, is a combination of alternative, individual tourism with orienteering using GPS receivers. Its main goal is to find a cache - Geocache, created by another participant of the game. People who create new caches try to use them to highlight all possible local attractions, enriched with various historical, natural and geological curiosities that are intended to encourage people to visit a given area.

You will also learn how modern technologies make treasure hunting easier. During the workshops, you will feel like an operator of an unmanned aircraft and see the world from its perspective.

We also have events planned for Tuesday for those seeking knowledge. The training for leadership competencies of the future will be conducted by dr hab. Małgorzata Dobrowolska, prof. SUT – a psychologist specializing in work, organization and management psychology. The event is dedicated to all those who would like to discover their leadership potential and determine the directions of personal development.

You will be able to learn about the current problems of large-scale energy storage during an online lecture entitled: "Life after life of underground mines" (lecture in English). The possibilities of using post-mining infrastructure for energy storage and current experience in this area will be presented here.

Wednesday, January 10th, is a day held under the slogan: Treasures in your hand. During the workshops, addressed to secondary and primary school pupils, they will learn to independently determine the basic macroscopic features of minerals found in the earth's crust. Additionally, it will be possible to conduct microscopic observations of these minerals. The workshops will be held at the Faculty of Mining, Safety Engineering and Industrial Automation (GIBIAP) of the Silesian University of Technology.

Thursday, January 11th is a day dedicated to "unearthly" treasures. Obtaining mineral resources requires the use of modern mining machines and technologies. The increasingly difficult working conditions of miners and the need to reach deposits in places inaccessible to humans (ocean depths, outer space) require the use of robots. During the workshops held at the Faculty of Mining, Safety Engineering and Industrial Automation of the Silesian University of Technology, we will present mining machines currently used in underground mines, as well as remotely controlled robots that explore hard-to-reach places. You will be able to learn how mining machines work and play the role of their operator. During the event, participants will be able to try their hand at searching for and obtaining minerals in space conditions.

On the same day, we also invite you to a lecture on meteorites. Kazimierz Mazurek - one of the founders of the Polish Meteorite Society, as well as a collector and owner of one of the largest collections of meteorites in Poland - will talk about what they are, where they come from and why they come to Earth and what cosmic bodies are their source. Every listener will be able to touch such a "cosmic" treasure!

On Friday, January 12th, we will meet at the Silesian University of Technology after dark to see the beauty of glowing minerals. As part of the event, students working in the scientific club will present a collection of fluorescent minerals from the collections of the Museum of Deposit Geology, as well as from those acquired during student research trips. You will be able to learn what luminescence is, what types of it there are and why minerals glow.

There will also be a show at the Museum of Deposit Geology. “How much gold is in your smartphone? – the most valuable and expensive metals”, consisting of the presentation of metal ores used in new technologies.

On Saturday and Sunday (January 13th, 14th), we are waiting for you at the Faculty of Mining, Safety Engineering and Industrial Automation of the Silesian University of Technology in Gliwice, where the minerals, rocks and fossils exchange will take place. The Earth's Treasures Exchange will be a meeting place for collectors, exhibitors, hobbyists and supporters of geology and mineralogy. There will be dozens of exhibitors, including a group of mineral and fossil hunters who have at their stands specimens from Poland and various parts of the world, and even extraterrestrial rocks - meteorites. Minerals, fossils, multi-coloured precious and decorative stones are also valuable raw materials carefully processed by craftsmen and artists offering a wide range of jewellery and jewellery products during the Exchange.

On these days, we have also planned additional attractions, including: the educational stand of Jura park in Krasiejów (including excavations for children in a sandbox with a skeleton, dinosaur models, fossils), educational stands of the Polish Geological Institute - National Research Institute: “First steps in the world of minerals" and "Fossils - traces of life preserved in rocks". You will also be able to see a collector's exhibition of minerals from the most famous treasure trove in Poland - Strzegom.
